As the crisp autumn air settles over Northwestern Wisconsin, hunters eagerly anticipate the start of pheasant hunting season. Coyland Creek, with its expansive 610-acre preserve, offers an exceptional upland bird hunting experience tailored for both seasoned hunters and newcomers alike.

Prime Hunting Grounds

Coyland Creek’s diverse terrain is meticulously managed to provide optimal habitat for pheasants and chuckers. The fields are a blend of prairie grasses, sorghum, and millet, offering varying cover depths to challenge hunters and their canine companions. Birds are released upon the arrival of hunters, ensuring a fresh and dynamic hunting experience each time. For those training young dogs or honing specific skills, bird hobblers and flagging are available upon request.

Guided Hunts and Canine Companions

While many hunters cherish the bond with their own dogs, Coyland Creek understands that not everyone has a trained hunting dog. To accommodate all enthusiasts, the preserve offers guided hunts complete with experienced handlers and well-trained dogs for an additional fee. This service ensures that even those new to the sport or without a canine partner can fully immerse themselves in the hunting experience. Moreover, for guests staying at the Northwoods Lodge, dogs are more than welcome to join, making it a true retreat for both hunter and hound.

Essential Gear for Your Hunt

Preparing for a fall pheasant hunt requires thoughtful consideration of gear, especially given the variable Wisconsin weather. Here’s a checklist to ensure a comfortable and successful outing:

  • Clothing: Opt for waterproof attire, including jackets, pants, and gloves. Layering is key, as temperatures can fluctuate between 30°F and 85°F during the fall. For hunts scheduled between November and March, pack a heavy winter coat, insulated gloves, and a warm hat.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable hunting boots paired with warm socks are essential, as the terrain demands ample walking.
  • Safety Gear: Protective eyewear and blaze orange clothing are mandatory to ensure visibility and safety in the field.
  • Hunting Accessories: A reliable hunting vest or shell belt will keep ammunition and other essentials within easy reach.
  • Firearm and Ammunition: A 12 or 20-gauge shotgun is recommended. Hunters can choose between steel or lead shot, and while bringing personal ammunition is acceptable, shells are also available for purchase on-site at Shotgun Willy’s.
